If you know me, you know I’ve been pushing CrossFit, not necessarily as a brand but as lifestyle, heavy – especially in the black community.
Why? Because we need it.
There’s more awareness now than ever about health and lifestyle diseases. But I’ve personally found that CrossFit is one of the realist and most accessible ways to get fit—physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Adopting this lifestyle has made me more disciplined and more intentional. It makes me think about how I treat my body, how I approach my day, how I prepare for adversity and challenges in my everyday life. .
And the annual Crossfit Open is a big part of that journey.
What is the Crossfit Open:
The CrossFit Open is an annual worldwide competition where athletes of all levels—from beginners to elite competitors—test their fitness through a series of workouts over three weeks. It’s the first stage of the CrossFit Games season and serves as a global community event that brings people together to challenge themselves.
Each week, a workout is released, and participants have a set time to complete it and submit their scores. These workouts are designed to push limits, testing strength, endurance, skill, and mental grit. The Open is unique because anyone can do it—whether you’re brand new to CrossFit or a seasoned competitor.
For most people, the Open is less about competing and more about personal growth. It’s a way to measure progress, push past comfort zones, and be part of a bigger movement in fitness.
Why You’ve Gotta Do This
If this is your first year, welcome to the journey. You’re in for an experience that’ll challenge you in ways you don’t even see coming. But trust me, it’s worth it.
So why do the Open? Because it forces you to level up. It pushes you in ways that your daily WoDs don’t. And even if you’re not a competitor, it gives you a benchmark—a way to see exactly where you’re at so that you can assess where you want to go. Without even realizing it, you’ll have a goal for next year. And that’s important.
This year is my sixth open. Every year, I get calls and texts from people after their first Open workout, all saying the same thing: “Man, that was different.” Yeah, it is. It takes you somewhere mentally and physically that you haven’t been before. And that’s the point. It’s time to start using benchmarks to measure our performance in life.
Why This Matters for Us
Let’s be real—our community has been dealing with too much when it comes to health. Diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity—these aren’t just random issues. They come from lifestyle habits, from mindset, from what we’ve been taught (or not taught) about taking care of ourselves.
And that’s why this journey is bigger than just lifting weights or doing burpees. It starts in your mind. How you think about your body. How you approach discipline. How you set goals and push yourself. When you step into the gym for the first time, you learn a lot about yourself. And if you stick with it, it’ll change how you move—not just in workouts, but in life.
